In 2022 and 2023, Julia Gaisbacher visited the studio houses of Hanne Darboven, took hundreds of photographs, and shot a film about the building complex in Rönneburg, Hamburg-Harburg. This two-part body of work titled Hanne Darboven. Am Burgberg will be presented in Vienna for the first time this evening.
Published by Hatje Cantz, the book concludes Julia Gaisbacher’s multi-year engagement with Hanne Darboven’s house and studio and simultaneously continues her exploration of so-called “dream houses.” The photographs offer sensitive insights into the conceptual artist’s studios in the south of Hamburg. The five houses served as both home and workplace for forty years. To this day, the unique architectural ensemble functions as a treasure trove for thousands of objects and artworks. Through precisely composed black-and-white photographs of the rooms—whose seemingly chaotic abundance stands in stark contrast to the strict order of Darboven’s works on paper—a visual dialogue unfolds between generations, across time and space.
