Magnum. A World of Photography

Exhibition visit

During our tour of the current exhibition with children, we will consider what questions the photographers might have been exploring and develop our opinions. A playful exercise, which is tailored to the current exhibition, helps participants have a deeper and participatory understanding and encourages them to reflect on their own use of media.

Magnum: A World of Photography
Together we will explore Magnum: A World of Photography, the first major exhibition at the new location of FOTO ARSENAL WIEN.

The exhibition investigates strategies of distribution and archiving using the example of Magnum, the most famous and influential photo agency in the world. The show gives fascinating insight into the world of photography and contemporary art. It examines undiscovered and otherwise secret working processes from contact sheets to vintage prints and darkroom work.

Questions that we will consider during our exhibition tour include: How does a picture become famous in the entire world? Among all the photographs that are taken, why are certain ones published and later end up in archives?

We will also take an interesting look at the processes of analog photography and the creation of imagery before the digital age. Together we will consider what icons have shaped our present.

The exhibition visit will be topped off with a fun activity that encourages the children to actively understand and reflect about their own use of media.

Today we all have our own collections and archives on our smartphone and on social media. The children are invited to spontaneously share pictures from their galleries and choose their favorites together in a moderated process. The aim is to analyze and consider how we make decisions about which pictures to save in our own archive, which one to publish, and which ones to send around the world.
